This scholarship was established in 1984 in memory of the Dorman’s. Alfred Dorman was born in February 1891 and had spent the early half of his life in Cordele before relocating to Statesboro to establish a wholesale produce business. It became successful and he owned stores in Statesboro, Sylvania, Jesup, Eastman, Millen, and Douglas. He served as President of the State Wholesale Grocers Association and was head of the National Association. Mr. Dorman was former Mayor of Statesboro, President of the Statesboro Rotary Club, President of the Highway 301 Association, Director of the Sea Island Bank, Director of the Sylvania Central Railroad, member of the Executive Committee of the Bulloch County Development Corporation, and other organizations. Mr. Dorman passed tragically in 1955 in a car accident. Mrs. Dorman was born in January of 1889 in South Carolina but lived in Statesboro where she was a devout member of the First United Methodist Church with her husband. At the church, she was a member of the Treasure Seekers Sunday School Class. Mrs. Dorman was the first President of the Civic Garden Club, a member of the Statesboro Women’s Club, a member of the first Library Board at Statesboro Regional Library, and an honorary trustee at Tallulah Falls School.
