Arthur G. Sparks Scholarship in Mathematics and Computer Sci
Established in 2002, this scholarship was created by Dr. Arthur G. Sparks, Chair of the Department of Math and Computer Science. Dr. Sparks attended the University of Georgia where he was an active member of Phi Kappa Phi. He went on to attend Clemson University where he was a member of Sigma Xi Research Society and he graduated from Georgia Southern in 1960 where he was a charter member of Phi Kappa Phi. Dr. Sparks began his tenure at Georgia Southern in 1969 as a Professor of Math and Computer Science and he later served as Chair of the Department for ten years. In 2000, Dr. Sparks was named Science and Tech Alumnus of the Year. The scholarship is available to entering freshmen who are enrolled full time and pursuing a mathematics or computer science degree. Second preference will be given to all other class levels with students who have an overall cumulative grade point average of 3.0 throughout the award period. Geographically, first preference is given to students from Bulloch County or one of the five surrounding counties (Effingham, Screven, Evans, Candler or Jenkins). Second preference will be given to students from any rural community in the State of Georgia.
Georgia Southern’s reputation as a University with a friendly, small-college atmosphere where the faculty know the students is reflected in the Department of Mathematical Sciences. There are no huge classes and office doors are open. The professors in the Department are highly qualified, and the Department has up-to-date computer labs. The Department of Mathematical Sciences offers an undergraduate leading to completion of a B.S. with a major in Mathematics. The department also offers the M.S. degree with concentrations in Mathematics and Statistics.
