Bartow Miller University Honors Program Scholarship

Bartow Miller University Honors Program Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 1999 by Mrs. Frances Miller and Mrs. Nancy Robbins in honor of Bartow Miller, Georgia Southern alumnus. Mr. Miller graduated from South Georgia Techers College (now Georgia Southern University) in 1939 with his bachelor’s in Industrial Arts. While in college, he played football, basketball, and held many offices on campus. Following graduation, Mr. Miller began teaching and coaching at Jesup High School, but he left joined the Army Air Corp to become a pilot during World War II. During his service, he flew fifty-one missions over Italy and Africa. For his service, he was awarded two purple hearts, the Air Medal with five oak leaf clusters, the Presidential Unit Citation, and the Bronze Star. Upon returning from war, Mr. Miller developed the Southland Grocery Company with three partners until he sold it fifteen years later. He then established the Food Vending Company which he operated until his retirement in 1988. Following retirement, Mr. Miller developed land near his Cusseta farm into a golf and residential community. In 1996, he was named Georgia Southern University Alumnus of the Year and was a member of the Wynnton United Methodist Church in Columbus, Georgia until his passing in 1997. This scholarship is available to members of the University Honors Program.

The University Honors Program provides a small college atmosphere in the context of a large comprehensive university. The program is designed to foster the development of a critical sense of inquiry, a spirit of creativity, a global perspective and an ethic of civic responsibility. A hallmark of the program is the emphasis on bringing ideas to life through undergraduate research, experiential learning and service-learning opportunities.

Students in the University Honors Program engage in a variety of experiences that facilitate the education of the whole person. While the life of the mind is at the core of the educational experience, we also offer leadership development opportunities, co-curricular events, and service-learning opportunities. In fact, our experiential learning program allows students to apply their knowledge and skills in a real-world environment on campus and in the local community. These kinds of learning opportunities help ideas come to life and make for a more rewarding and meaningful undergraduate education.
