Bill and Betty Hatcher University Honors Program Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 1999 by Former Mayor of Statesboro, Bill Hatcher, and his wife, Betty. Though both Hatcher’s attend the University of Georgia, Bill Hatcher interned as a pharmacist in Statesboro and took a job shortly after. He soon opened his own pharmacy and was Mayor of Statesboro for eight years. While owning the pharmacy, he was shot twice by an armed robber and lost the ability to walk. Through perseverance, he fully recovered. The Hatcher’s own Hallmark Card Stores in Statesboro, Atlanta, Augusta, and Florida. They are avid supporters of Georgia Southern and members of the First United Methodist Church. Mr. Hatcher has served as Chairman of the Statesboro-Bulloch County Recreation Board, President of the Georgia Southern University Foundation Board, Fund Drive Chair of the United Way, President of the Statesboro Rotary Club, Board Member of the Statesboro-Bulloch Chamber of Commerce, member of the Board of Directors of Farmers & Merchants Bank, member of the Board of Directors for Joseph’s Home for Boy’s, and member of the Board of Directors for Ogeechee Home Healthcare Agency. This scholarship is available to members of the University Honors Program.

The University Honors Program provides a small college atmosphere in the context of a large comprehensive university. The program is designed to foster the development of a critical sense of inquiry, a spirit of creativity, a global perspective and an ethic of civic responsibility. A hallmark of the program is the emphasis on bringing ideas to life through undergraduate research, experiential learning and service-learning opportunities.
