The Dr. and Mrs. Bruce Grube University Honors Program Scholarship was established by the Georgia Southern University Foundation, Inc. in 2009 upon Dr. Bruce Grube’s retirement as Georgia Southern University’s eleventh President. Prior to coming to Georgia Southern, Dr. Grube served as President of St. Cloud State University in Minnesota, Provost at the University of Southern Colorado, and held various positions with California State Polytechnic University. Dr. Grube received his PhD from the University of Texas with a focus on American government and politics, public administration, and comparative politics. He earned his A.B. in Political Science from the University of California in Berkeley, California. While President of Georgia Southern, the University experience greater enrollment numbers, higher test scores, and building expansions. This scholarship is available to members of the University Honors Program.

The Kathryn Grube Unsung Hero Leadership Scholarship was established in 2012 by the Office of Student Affairs to honor former Georgia Southern University First Lady, Kathryn Grube. Mrs. Grube has served as honorary co-chair of the 2000 March of Dimes fundraising walk, chapter chair of the American Red Cross Bulloch County chapter, co-chair of the 2003 United Way of Southeast Georgia fund drive, charter member of the Statesboro Arts Council, chair of the Facilities Committee during the construction of the Averitt Arts Center, President of the Arts Council, honorary spokesperson for Students Against Drunk Driving, ex-officio board member of the Georgia Southern Symphony Association, and recipient of the Herald Humanitarian of the Year Award. This scholarship is available to students enrolled full-time who meet the established criteria for leadership scholarships as defined by the Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs and Enrollment Management. The applicant must be actively enrolled in organized leadership programs provided by the Office of Student Leadership and Civic Engagement.

The Mert H. Starnes and Bruce W. Grube University Honors Program Scholarship was established in 2004 by former Georgia Southern President Dr. Bruce Grube and his wife, Kathryn, in memory of their fathers. Mert H. Starnes was born in 1925 in Lubbock, Texas and attended Texas Tech University. He graduated from the University of Texas Law School and practiced law in Austin, Texas for over thirty years. After serving in the Attorney General’s Officer in the early 1950’s, he transferred to a private practice where he specialized in transportation law. He was known for his artistic talents and his service in Italy during World War II. Bruce W. Grube was born in Sioux City, Iowa and graduated from the University of Nebraska where he majored in Engineering and Business Administration. He raised his family in California where he worked for Kaiser Steel as Director of Management Development and Training. He was a member of the Lions Club, Vice President of the Disaster Committee of the Red Cross, and a Junior Warden of the Board of Vestry of St. Mark’s Church. This scholarship is available to members of the University Honors Program.
