Dr. George A. Rogers, Jr. Scholarship in History

This scholarship was established in memory of Dr. George A. Rogers, Jr., former history professor at Georgia Southern University. An Illinois native. Dr. Rogers graduated from Illinois College in 1940 with his B.A. and took up a job at Gem City Business College in Quincy, Illinois. However, it wasn’t long until he bravely enlisted in World War II where he served in the European Theater in the 1st Army, 542nd Anti-Aircraft Artillery Automatic Weapons Battalion as a reconnaissance and communications officer where he served for four years. Following his service, Dr. Rogers took advantage of the G.I. Bill issued by President Roosevelt and attended graduate school at the University of Illinois where he earned his PhD in History in 1950. Dr. Rogers then relocated to Georgia Southern where he served in the History Department for thirty-three years until he retired in 1983. During his time, he co-authored, “Swamp Water and Wiregrass-Historical Sketches of Coastal Georgia”. He also served on the Heritage Trust Commission where he was appointed. This scholarship is available to deserving undergraduate and graduate students in the Department of History.
