Great Dane Trailers University Honors Program Scholarship

Great Dane Trailers University Honors Program Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 2000 by Great Dane Trailers. Great Dane was founded in 1900 in Savannah, Georgia as the Savannah Blow Pipe Company. The company fabricated sheet metal systems used to move sawdust and woodchips in sawmills, furniture, and mill work plants. In 1931, they began to design and manufacture truck trailers for over-the-road freight hauling. In the early 1940’s, the company pioneered the refrigerated trailer field, building the first produce van with a wet ice bunker and a motor and blower cooling system which was soon followed by the first factory-finished refrigerated van. In WWII, the company produced about 12,000 trailers for the Army and Navy. In 1958, they changed their name to Great Dane Trailers, Inc. and in 2009, opened a plant in Statesboro, Georgia.
