The John F. and Martha T. Nolen Leader/Scholar Scholarship was established in 1999 by the Nolen family in honor of Dr. and Mrs. Nolen upon their retirement from Georgia Southern. Dr. Nolen was appointed as Georgia Southern’s first Vice President for Student Affairs in 1987, after serving as Director of Student Activities, Assistant Dean of Students, and Dean of Students. Under his leadership, Career Services, SOAR, the Multicultural Program, the Community Advisor Program and Volunteer Services were created. Mrs. Nolen, graduated from Georgia Southern with a Masters in Education. She began her career with the University in 1979 as an instructor in the Learning Support Department and was later promoted to Assistant Professor. Mrs. Nolen co-authored two textbooks, served on a number of committees and made numerous professional presentations. The scholarship is awarded to outstanding students who are considered to be leaders among their peers. Selection will be made following the criteria established for the Southern LEAD Scholarship.

This Dr. John F. Nolen SGA Scholarship was renamed to honor the works of Dr. John F. Nolen who retired from Georgia Southern in 2003. Dr. Nolen was appointed as Georgia Southern’s first Vice President for Student Affairs in 1987, after serving as Director of Student Activities, Assistant Dean of Students, and Dean of Students. Under his leadership, Career Services, SOAR, the Multicultural Program, the Community Advisor Program and Volunteer Services were created. This scholarship is available to undergraduate students at the sophomore, junior, or senior level with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher while attending Georgia Southern. Applicants must have been enrolled for two consecutive semesters and have passed a minimum of twenty-four credit hours during the two semesters. Applicants require two letters of recommendation. Each applicant’s academic performance, disciplinary records, and extracurricular activities will be taken into consideration.

Scholarships
