Judge Grady and Sara Dickey Scholarship
This scholarship was established in honor and memory of Judge Grady L. Dickey and his wife, Sara L. Dickey by the Armstrong Alumni Association. Judge Dickey attended public schools in Chatham County, Georgia and graduated from Commercial High School in 1942. Following his military service after graduation, he attended Armstrong Junior College and became valedictorian of his 1948 graduating class. While attending Armstrong, Judge Dickey served as President of the student body and was active in various student organizations. After receiving his bachelor of law degree from Emory University in 1950, Judge Dickey returned to Savannah, Georgia to practice law. He practiced as a trial lawyer for twenty-five years and served as assistant city attorney from 1955 to 1959. He was active in the political arena, serving in the Georgia House of Representatives from 1961 to 1962, serving as Vice Chairman of the Democratic Party of Georgia, and running for Mayor in 1960. In 1975, he was appointed by the governor as Judge of the Juvenile Court of Chatham County and was the President of the Council of Juvenile Court Judges upon his passing in 1980. Judge Dickey served as President of the Armstrong Alumni Association and served a six-year term on the Armstrong State College Commission during his life. Sara L. Dickey was born in Savannah, Georgia in 1927 and graduated from Savannah High School in 1945. She graduated from Armstrong Junior College in 1947 and began a career as a public school teacher, but soon moved into the real estate business in 1952. During her life, she was involved with the Armstrong State College Alumni Association, the La Sertoma Club, the League of Women Voters, the Evergreen Garden Club, the Junior Women’s Club, and the Savannah Bar Auxiliary. In her work like, Mrs. Dickey was a member of the Savannah Real Estate Board, the Women’s Council, and a graduate of the Georgia Realtor’s Institute. She passed in 1989. This scholarship is an Armstrong Alumni legacy scholarship meaning recipients must be demonstrably related by blood, marriage, or adopted to an alumnus of any incarnation of the institution of higher learning known as Armstrong (Armstrong Junior College, Armstrong State College, Armstrong Atlantic State University, Armstrong State University). Recipients must have an anticipated or declared major in a field of government such as pre-law, political science, or criminal justice. Recipient must have a minimum GPA of 3.0. Incoming freshmen must have and SAT score of at least 1000. This scholarship is renewable.
