Lovejoy Scholarship in Vertebrate Zoology

This scholarship was founded by Dr. Bill and Mrs. Martha Lovejoy. Dr. Lovejoy graduated from Muskingum University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Geology. At Muskingum, he was the Sports Editor for their student magazine and a member of the varsity football and baseball teams. Dr. Lovejoy was born into a family of coal miners and was the first in his family to graduate from college. During his life, he served in the Navy during World War II. Dr. Lovejoy went on to attend the University of New Mexico in 1958 where he earned his Master of Science degree in Geology and he began working for Shell Oil Company as a geologist. In 1972, Dr. Lovejoy earned his Doctor of Philosophy in Zoology from Oregon State University and joined the faculty at Georgia Southern University. He retired after nineteen years with the title of Professor Emeritus of Biology. Mrs. Lovejoy earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Education from Muskingum and taught in New Mexico, Texas, Oregon, and Georgia. Mrs. Lovejoy has since passed. The Lovejoy Vertebrate Zoology Scholarship will be awarded to a rising junior, senior, or a graduate level student majoring in biology. The recipient should have an overall grade point average of 3.0 or higher and a demonstrated interest in vertebrate zoology. Personal character and financial need may be considered.
