Milan E. Degyansky University Honors Program Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 1999 by Mr. Charles G. “Bill” Herrington in honor of Professor Milan Degyansky. Mr. Degyansky was an Altoona, Pennsylvania native who earned his B.S. and M.S. degree in Sanitary Engineering from Pennsylvania State University and became a registered professional engineer. During his life, he served as a professor in Civil Engineering Technology at Pennsylvania State University, Norwich University, Virginia Polytechnic Institute, Virginia State University, and Georgia Southern University. In 1998, he was promoted to full professor at Georgia Southern where he worked for nineteen years. At Georgia Southern, he served on numerous committees, the faculty senate, and helped establish the Academic Advisement Center where he served as an advisor. Mr. Degyansky was instrumental in developing the master plan for developing the Georgia Southern campus. During his career, he was active in the American Society of Civil Engineers and in 1990, he became the first non-metro Atlanta civil engineer to serve as president. At the national level, he served as chair of the ASCE Committee for Technology, Curriculum, and Accreditation. Mr. Degyanksy was instrumental in Georgia’s establishment of the ASCE club award which is given annually at Georgia Southern University’s Honors Day Convocation. In 1993, he received a Georgia Southern Faculty Service Award for helping the local region develop a solid waste plan. He was a member of the Bulloch County Solid Waste Advisory Committee and the Statesboro Trustee Board as well as a charter member of the Southeast Georgia Clean and Beautiful Commission. Mr. Degyanksy was also an active member of the Georgia Water Pollution and Control Association and the American Society of Engineering and Education. This scholarship is available to members of the University Honors Program. First preference shall go to Engineering majors.
