Pauline Gooch

Pauline Gooch

Miss Gooch was born in 1920 in Paris, Kentucky. She moved to Savannah at an early age with her parents, L.L. Gooch and Augusta Palmer Gooch. Mr. Gooch was a watchmaker. Miss Gooch was educated in the local schools, graduating from Savannah High School. She attended Armstrong College, and graduated from the University of Georgia, in Athens, earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in Sociology.

Miss Gooch was very active in social and civil service throughout her life. During World War II, she worked in Florida as a recreation director for several hospitals. She returned to Savannah as a teen director with the local YMCA. She went into civil service at Fort Benning and served in subsequent assignments in the Azores and Korea. She was later transferred to Hunter Army Airfield where she remained until her retirement in 1984.

Throughout her career, she displayed a strong interest in the welfare of people in general. She was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Savannah and was particularly supportive of the Vietnam Witness Assistance Program. Miss Gooch has several councils residing in the Savannah and Brunswick areas.
