Pickett-Garvin Scholarship in Information Systems
The Pickett-Garvin Scholarship in Information Systems was established in 2000 by Dr. John R. Pickett and his wife, Billie Garvin Pickett. Dr. Pickett was born in 1934 in Kentucky, but was raised in both Arkansas and Tennessee. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force where he was posted in Savannah, Georgia and met his wife, Billie. While in the Air Force, Dr. Picket attended the University of Wyoming and earned a degree in Math and the Air Force Institute of Technology where he earned a degree in System Analysis. He served for twenty-two years before retiring from the Pentagon. Following retirement, he earned his Ph.D. from the University of Georgia and became a professor in the College of Business Administration at Georgia Southern University in 1979 where he helped shaped and lead the Management Department. He was instrumental in the creation of the Information Systems degree program in 1981 and was a charter member of the Business Executive Society. Dr. Pickett passed in 2017 and is survived by his wife. This scholarship is available to an Information Systems major with a minimum adjusted GPA of 3.0. The recipient must have completed seventy-five semester hours at an accredited institution of higher education and have been admitted to Georgia Southern University. Special consideration will be given to applicants who are non-traditional.
