The Cone Family Scholarships

The Cone Family Scholarships

The Kate Parker Cone University Honors Program Scholarship was established in 1999 by Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Cone in memory in Mr. Cone’s mother, Kate Parker Cone. Kate was born in 1883 in Baxley, Georgia and graduated from Brenau College in Gainesville, Georgia with a degree in Education. Education was high valued in the Cone and Parker families which is what brought them to be involved with South Georgia Teachers College in Statesboro. Mrs. Cone married Howell Cone, for whom Cone Hall is named after, a Statesboro attorney and member of the Board of Trustees of South Georgia Teachers College. She was well-known in her church and community where she taught Sunday School and participated in the founding of the Statesboro Public Library. Mrs. Cone was a local correspondent for The Bulloch Times and The Atlanta Constitution and was a known poet. In 1933, the family moved to Savannah where she continued to teach Sunday School and Thursday Morning Reading Clubs. She remained committed to education and local libraries throughout her life. This scholarship is available to members of the University Honors Program who have a major within the College of Arts and Humanities.

The Constance Cling Cone University Honors Program Scholarship was established in 1999 by Mr. and Mrs. Thomas E. Cone in memory of his sister, Constance Cling Cone. Ms. Constance Cone was born in 1913 to Kate and Howell Cone who were proud supporters of Georgia Southern. Ms. Cone graduated from South Georgia Teachers College (Georgia Southern University) with a degree in Education. She then attended Florida State University where she earned her M.A. in Early Childhood Education. Ms. Cone taught in several locations across Georgia and Florida, but she returned to teach fifth grade at Marvin Pittman Laboratory School on the Georgia Southern campus from 1951 to 1973. Ms. Cone was a devout member of the First Baptist Church of Statesboro, an avid bird watcher, and Cone Hall on the Statesboro campus is named for her father who helped found the University. Ms. Cone passed in 1989. This scholarship is available to members of the University Honors Program. First preference is given to students majoring in Early Childhood Education. If no student is found, the scholarship shall go to any UHP member within the College of Education.
