Winifred Case Karnosky Nursing Scholarship

Winifred Case Karnosky Nursing Scholarship

Established in 2006, this scholarship was created by Winifred Case Karnosky. Karnosky has the honor of being one of the first women to enlist in the Marine Corps Women’s Reserve after Congress approved its formation in 1943. A previous bookkeeper, Karnosky dreamed of nursing when she met Corporal Benedict (Ben) Karnosky, her future husband. In the 1950’s, she accompanied him to Italy where she witnessed demonstrations by the reemerging Communist Party. In 1955, she witnessed the lowering of the Soviet flag in Austria. In the 1960s, she was in Spain to witness General Francisco Franco lead a parade on the streets below. Whenever her husband Colonel Karnosky was stationed in Savannah, Georgia, Winifred served on the board of the USO and volunteered frequently with the American Cancer Society, the Red Cross, and the Pink Ladies at Memorial Health. While in Savannah, she also enrolled at Armstrong and reignited her interest in nursing, so she established this scholarship. This renewable scholarship is available to Armstrong students enrolled in the School of Nursing. Preference is given to students with unmet financial need.
