Sudie A. Fulford Scholarship

The scholarship was established in 1991 by A.D. Correll (chair and chief executive officer of Georgia Pacific Corporation) as a Christmas gift for his wife, Ada Lee Fulford Correll, daughter of Sudie Akins Fulford, the scholarship’s namesake. Mrs. Fulford was a Bulloch County native who graduated from Georgia Teachers College (GTC) with a major in English and minors in both French and history. Her first teaching position was in Portal. Since the city did not have money to pay her, her father paid her. She married her college sweetheart, Durward Fulford, a star football player who was inducted into the Georgia Southern Athletic Hall of Fame in 1960. Mr. and Mrs. Fulford resided in Swainsboro where she taught in the public school system for 30 years. She was known as a dedicated, innovative, creative, and fair teacher whose love of her students was surpassed only by her love of her family. Mrs. Fulford died in 1986 while touring England with her daughter, Mrs. Correll. Recipients for the Sudie A. Fulford Scholarship must be outstanding students majoring in early childhood education.
