Jim and Ruth Miller Scholarship

The scholarship was established in 1996 by Jim and Ruth Miller. Mr. Miller and his family have maintained a long, close association with Georgia Southern University. In 1906, Mr. Miller’s paternal grandfather, James R. Miller, was editor of the Statesboro News, and was appointed to the inaugural First District Board of Trustees. At the board’s first meeting in Savannah on December 1, 1906, he was elected secretary. James R. Miller was also part of the delegation which bid against neighboring Tattnall and Emanuel counties that day to offer a home for the newly authorized First District Agricultural and Mechanical School. Jim Miller’s maternal grandfather, J.H. Donaldson, helped with the construction of the first campus buildings. Recipients for the Jim and Ruth Miller Scholarship must be majoring in early childhood education, middle grades education, or secondary education. Recipients must have and maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0. Financial need, extracurricular activities in school, community involvement and prior work experience will be considered when making the selection.
