J.C. Hunter Memorial Scholarship

Established in 2001 by Mrs. Brenda H. Browning in memory of her father, the J.C. Hunter Memorial Scholarship memorializes the life of educator J.C. Hunter. Born in 1914 in Wilcox County, Georgia, Hunter graduated from Abbeville High School in 1931 and from Georgia Teachers College in 1941. During the first thirteen years of his career, Hunter taught math and eventually became principal in Ben Hill County. He went on to become the principal of Lynnwood School in 1938 and held that position for eight years. For two years he took a hiatus to pursue entrepreneurship, but decided to return to education. Upon his return, he was elected superintendent of Ben Hill County in January of 1949. Hunter transformed the school system’s financial crisis and created a prospering environment for students and educators alike. He oversaw consolidations, expansions, and additions of new schools. In December of 1976, Mr. Hunter retired and he passed in July of 2000 after a life dedicated to education. This scholarship is available to Math Education majors with a 3.0 GPA or high. The COE Scholarship Committee will select the recipients.
