Robert S. Haywood Family Scholarship

Established in 2007 by Paul and Liz Gillespie, this scholarship memorializes the life of Elizabeth’s father, Robert S. Haywood. Haywood was born in 1930 in Columbia, Tennessee, but grew up in Jackson, Mississippi. He graduated from Forest Hill High School in 1948, Hinds Junior College in 1950, and began attending Georgia Tech when he joined the Army to serve during the Korean War where he served as an Airborne Ranger. He graduated from Georgia Tech in 1954 with a degree in Industrial Engineering and was the owner/operator of Southeastern Metal Products until he retired in 2005. Haywood was an active member of Northside Drive Baptist Church since 1963, was past president of R.I.C.A., and has funded many scholarships. This scholarship is available to sons and daughters of former or current US Army Rangers who have chosen to attend Georgia Southern.
