Dr. Martha B. Fay Scholarship
This scholarship was established in memory of Dr. Martha Bozeman Fay. Dr. Fay was born in November of 1912 in Ft. Smith, Arkansas and moved to Savannah in 1944 to teach Biology and Chemistry at Armstrong College from 1944 to 1949. Dr. Fay had earned her B.A. from Rockford College in 1935 and her M.S. and Ph.D. in Zoology with a specialty in Genetics from the University in Illinois in 1945. While living in Savannah, Dr. Fay served on the Savannah-Chatham County Board of Education (1975-1991) and even served as its President. She served on the Chatham Board of Health from 1984 to 2001 and was President for three years. The Chatham County Health Department building is named in her honor. During her life, Dr. Fay had lived in Switzerland and served on the boards of The Girl Scouts of America, Family Counseling Center, Traveler’s Aid, United Way of Savannah, American Association of University Women, League of Women Voters, and Interfaith Interracial Committer. She also served as the Project Administrator of the Child Evaluation Center and was the first female Diplomate as a Ph.D. Medical Geneticist of the American Society for Human Genetics. She was also awarded the Clara Barton Sisterhood Award of the Unitarian Universalist Church and the Tony Buttimer Award from the Georgia Democratic Party. Dr. Fay passed in 2010. This scholarship is available to students enrolled either in the Department of Biology or Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. The recipient must be a junior or senior and have a minimum overall GPA of 3.0 or higher.
