Victoria B. Zwald Memorial Scholarship
Established in 2007 by her husband Drew Zwald, this scholarship memorializes former Georgia Southern professor Victoria B. Zwald. Zwald was born in 1950 and graduated from James Blair High School in Williamsburg, Virginia in 1968. Following high school, Zwald earned her B.S in Education (Summa Cum Laude) and M.Ed. in Supervision of Special Education from Ohio University. She soon began serving as an Inclusion Specialist for Chapel Hill/Carrboro City School and School-Based Consultant in the School of Education at the University of North Carolina. In 1994, Mrs. Zwald joined Georgia Southern University and taught education classes as well as supervised student teachers. During her time, she was awarded a number of grants, published many articles/book chapters/manuals, and was a member or chaired over seventy-five university, college, department or community committees. Mrs. Zwald also taught special education in public schools for eleven years. She earned fourteen international, national, state, and local honors/recognitions for her works. This scholarship is available to a full-time rising junior or senior who is in good standing with Georgia Southern and has at least a 3.5 GPA. The student should be enrolled as an Early Childhood Education or Special Education major. First preference will be given to students who participate in their communities through extracurricular activities associated with children.* All applicants must provide four written references: two personal recommendations and two professional academic references* and must submit an autobiographical sketch that includes a statement about teaching philosophy and actual examples of utilizing their teaching beliefs.
