Zoltan Farkas Studies Abroad Scholarship
Established in 1995 by Dr. Stephen J. Farkas (Class of 1974), this scholarship was created to honor his father, Dr. Zoltan Farkas. The elder Dr. Farkas hailed from Arad, Hungary where he had made a name for himself receiving his PhD in German, Hungarian Language, and Literature and Commercial Correspondence from the University of Budapest in 1931. He was an adventurous spirit who traveled throughout Europe tutoring the Hungarian Ambassador’s children in Ankara, Turkey. He served as a professor at Presbyterian College in Budapest, Hungary. As communism rose across Europe, Dr. Farkas feared for his family and decided a new start was best and made his way to the United States in 1949, arriving at the port of New Orleans with a young family in tow. He soon found a job as a foreign language professor at Armstrong State University until he retired in 1974. This scholarship is available to full-time students who have a minimum GPA of 2.5 in foreign language classes and have been accepted into the Studies Abroad Program.
