Marcia White Jones Scholarship
Established in 2012 by Luther D. Jones, this scholarship memorializes the life of his late wife, Dr. Marcia White Jones. Dr. Jones was born in 1959 in Castries, St. Lucia, West Indies and graduated from the University of West Indies with a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics in 1980. She then continued to the University of Illinois where she earned her Master of Science (1983) and Doctorate of Philosophy (1986) in Agricultural Economics. Dr. Jones served as assistant professor, associate professor, and professor in the School of Economic Development at Georgia Southern University. During her service, she served as Director of the Affirmative Action Office and Associate Vice President for Institutional Compliance. Upon relocating to Watkinsville, Dr. Jones found employment with the University of Georgia as a Public Service Associate with the Center for Agribusiness and Economic Development. She passed in 2011. The scholarship is available to freshmen pre-business majors with a high school grade point average ranging from 2.5 to 2.99 and who reside in Bulloch County, GA or a surrounding rural county. Preference will be given to students who have completed or been involved with programs such as the Education Talent Search, Upward Bound, Minority Advisement Program, The Boys and Girls Club, or similar organization and demonstrates need based on family income. Strongest consideration will be given to those students who demonstrate significant community involvement.
