Walter and Audrey Campbell Family/Velma Kemp Scholarship for Choral Music

Established in 2006, this scholarship serves as a memorial to the Campbell’s as well as Mrs.Velma Kemp, a family friend. Walter Campbell was born in 1927 in Waycross, Georgia. He graduated from Georgia Southern in 1950 with a degree in Liberal Arts. Audrey Campbell was born in 1931 in Houston, Texas and moved to Statesboro, Georgia in 1973. Her passion for choral singing was unmatched with her first performance taking place at the age of three. In her life, she had the honor of performing at the Avery Fisher Concert Hall in New York City. Her final performance at the age of 82 was under the direction of legendary Dr. Michael Braz. She received many honors in her lifetime such as the Deen Day Smith Service to Mankind Award and Humanitarian of the Year Award. When not performing, she dedicated her time as licensed professional counselor at Georgia Southern University. She held three degrees from Georgia Southern and two degrees from Armstrong State College. Mrs. Velma Kemp was born in 1909 in Statesboro, Georgia and served as the Department Head of Mathematics at Statesboro High School after receiving a degree from Georgia College and State University.

The scholarship is available to students majoring in Choral Music Education who are registered in or have completed Elementary Music Methods by the fall semester of the scholarship year. It is preferred that the students be involved in the Statesboro Youth Chorale or a similar organization. Should no Choral Music Education major be found, the scholarship may be open to Instrumental Music Education majors. The recipient should maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.0.
