Elizabeth H. and X. L. Garrison Education Scholarship

Established in 2013 by Synovus, this scholarship memorializes the lives of Elizabeth H. and X.L. Garrison. Elizabeth was born in February of 1914 in Madison, Wisconsin and went on to attend the University of Alabama where she earned her master’s degree. She then continued to the University of Florida where she received her Doctorate in Education. For the following years, Elizabeth traveled as she served as a principal and a supervisor at various schools across the country until she settled as a professor at Georgia Southern. She taught at Georgia Southern for over sixteen years. During her time here, she become an active member of Pittman Park United Methodist Church, White Bluff United Methodist Church, Phi Beta Kappa, and Daughters of the Revolution. Among her accomplishments is being known as a renowned quilter and having one of her works displayed in a museum in Brunswick, Georgia. She passed in 2010. X.L. Garrison was born in 1915 in Kentucky and bravely served during World War II as a Major in the U.S. Army. During his life, he also served as an educator after receiving a degree from the University of Kentucky. This scholarship is available to full-time junior or senior students pursuing a degree in Early Childhood Education or a graduate level student pursuing a master’s degree in Educational Leadership who has a demonstrated interest in Early Childhood Education. The students must have a 3.5 cumulative GPA and must be in the top ten percent of their class in academic achievement.
