LTC Retired John "Opie" Davis Scholarship
The LTC John E. “Opie” Davis scholarship is to support a Georgia Southern student is who is a member of the Georgia Army National Guard, a member of the ROTC Battalion, and is also enrolled on the Statesboro campus.
As a 1993 graduate of Georgia Southern University and the ROTC program, this scholarship was designed to give back to such an amazing program to support future officers striving for excellence and leadership.
LTC John “Opie” Davis’ military career began as a Platoon Leader with Bravo Company, 648th Engineer Battalion. He also held platoon leader positions in HHC and A Company 648th Engineer Battalion as well as 153rd Engineer Company. LTC Davis spent time as the Executive Officer for Alpha Company 648th Engineer Battalion before moving up to staff to work as the Battalion S4. He commanded Charlie Company 648th Engineer Battalion prior to working as the information officer for HHC 48th Infantry Brigade Combat Team. He moved back into HHC 648th Engineer Battalion to serve as the S-3 operations officer during Operation Iraqi Freedom. Additionally, LTC Davis worked at Ft. Stewart as the Construction Facilities Management Officer and Georgia Guard Training Center before taking on the position of Executive Officer for the 265th Regional Support Group. Before LTC Davis retired in February 2013 he had the honor of being the 48th BSTB Battalion Commander.
LTC Davis’s awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Iraqi Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Humanitarian Service Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Georgia Commendation Medal, and the State Defense Medal. He is also a graduate of Sapper Leader Course, Airborne School, Air Assault School, and 2003 recipient of the William Few Award for the State of Georgia.
