Cohen and Newelle Anderson Memorial Scholarship

Cohen and Newelle Anderson Memorial Scholarship

The Cohen Anderson Scholarship was established in 1989 following the death of Mr. Anderson. In 1997, Mr. Anderson’s widow, Newelle D. Anderson, passed away. At that time, the family asked that the scholarship be renamed the Cohen and Newelle D. Anderson Memorial Scholarship to pay tribute to both Mr. and Mrs. Anderson.

Mr. and Mrs. Anderson were longtime supporters of Georgia Southern University, Southern Boosters, Statesboro First Baptist Church, and the Statesboro/Bulloch County community as a whole. Mr. Anderson, a native of Bulloch County, attended Georgia Teachers College, where he started as quarterback on the football team from 1931 to 1933. He was a member of the Georgia Southern University Lettermen Association and was named by the Georgia Southern University Alumni Association as Alumnus of the Year in 1982. Mrs. Anderson served for many years on the Georgia Southern University Alumni Association Board of Directors and was president of the board in 1972, 1973, and 1979. In 1975, she was named by the Association as Alumna of the Year. She assisted the Association by planning the 1932 to 1942 class reunion for 36 consecutive years. She served on the committee that successfully sought university status for Georgia Southern College. The Cohen and Newell D. Anderson Memorial Scholarship provides recognition and financial reward for outstanding students enrolled in any degree program within the GSU Department of Music.
