Sally T. Gershman Scholarship in History

Established in 1994, the Sally T. Gershman Scholarship in History was created as a memorial in honor of the late Dr. Sally T. Gershman by her children, Dyan and Michael Gershman. Dr. Gershman taught French history at Georgia Southern University from 1980 to 1992.

A New York City native, Dr. Gershman attended St. John’s University on a New York State Regent’s Scholarship and received her B.A. in History in 1954. She received a Fulbright Fellowship for graduate study in France and received a certificate in Political Science from the Institute d’Etudes Politique, University of Paris, in 1955. Dr. Gershman received an M.A. in European History in 1967, and M.S.T. in Economics in 1973, and a Ph.D. in European History in 1978, all from the University of Missouri. Dr. Gershman joined the faculty of Georgia Southern University in 1980 and received the Award for Excellence in Teaching in 1988.

Dr. Gershman published numerous scholarly articles on French history and presented many papers to professional societies. She was also the Treasurer for the Society for French Historical Studies from 1983 to 1989 and a member of its Executive Committee from 1983 to 1992. Dr. Gershman also served on the Executive Council of the Western Society for French History from 1986 to 1989.

This scholarship is available to full-time students majoring in History at the undergraduate (junior or senior) level or pursuing a graduate degree in History, in each case who have a special interest in either French history or European history. Eligible applicants must have a grade point average of 3.2 or higher.
