Howard Lumber Business Scholarship

The scholarship was established in 2006 as a way to recognize deserving students while at the same time serving as a living memorial to Claude A. Howard. Mr. Howard was born in 1912 in Bulloch County. He graduated from Statesboro High School and attended South Georgia Teachers College. During the 1930s and 1940s, Mr. Howard worked at Howard Lumber Company, his father’s family sawmill and building material business. During the early 1940s, he operated a part time construction company. In 1946, he started in business full time, organizing Claude Howard Lumber Company, a saw milling operation which is still in business today as one of Statesboro’s oldest manufacturing operations. Mr. Howard died in 1975. Two local businesses, Howard Lumber and Hardware and Claude Howard Lumber Company, are owned and operated by the Howard family today. The Howard Lumber Business Scholarship is available to rising or existing seniors enrolled in the College of Business Administration pursuing any major. Preference may be given to students who have designated entrepreneurship/small business concentration in management. Consideration may be given to students who are employees of Howard Lumber Company and meet the existing criteria.
